Cognitive assessments can be conducted if there is a suspected intellectual disability, developmental delay, executive functioning (e.g., attention) concerns, impaired academic progress or if an assessment of intelligence is required, including identifying children as academically gifted. Cognitive assessments are also conducted for children who require intellectual assessment as part of an NDIS application.
This type of assessment is used when there are suspected learning disorders, delayed academic progress, or identification of giftedness. Testing evaluates a child's abilities in specific school subjects, such as reading, oral language, written language, and mathematics. Intelligence may play a role in completing these tests, but it is not directly measured by achievement tests.
QPA psychologists can conduct initial assessment of suspected autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and intellectual disability. Assessment areas can include communication skills, socialisation, behaviour, and sensory sensitivities as well as executive functioning skills. Adaptive functioning is also assessed.
Please note: Further evidence from a GP/paediatrician will be required to support a diagnosis of ASD or ADHD for NDIS applications or school verifications.
Functional capacity assessment measures abilities, disabilities, strengths, challenges, improvements or decline in functioning, and identifying areas that require support. An individual's ability for daily living skills (adaptive functioning) can also be assessed.
QPA psychologists can conduct assessments for adults for the following conditions:
- Diagnostic Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Cognitive ability / functioning testing;
- Learning difficulties, including specific learning difficulties;
- Diagnostic Assessment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD);
- Adaptive Behaviour / Functional Assessment for NDIS or other support purposes.
Assessment can include social/emotional concerns, and identify mental health concerns as per DSM-5 criteria. .
In addition to initial assessment for NDIS applications, QPA can also help clients navigate the application process if required.
Our highly experienced psychologists use a range of gold-standard assessment tools to provide a standardised and objective way of measuring a child’s cognitive functioning, educational achievement, behaviour and/or mental characteristics. Our psychologists tailor a battery of assessments unique to your child's individual referral, to determine your child's strengths and weaknesses in these areas. Following assessment, you will be provided with a detailed report that contains evidence based recommendations and strategies to support your child's academic and social development. Assessment results can guide clinical referrals and recommendations, so your child can receive the best possible care and reach his or her potential.
Assessments involve a wide range of information gathering, and children will complete paper-pencil inventories and activities, as well as online assessments. Classroom or playground observations may also be required, and QPA psychologists will contact schools to arrange this, after consent is provided. Most of the assessment will be completed by the child being assessed, although in some cases, parents/caregivers, teachers or support workers may also be required to complete surveys and questionnaires. The time required to complete a battery of assessment can vary greatly, although most assessments may involve up to six hours and occur over two or more days. QPA psychologists can conduct the assessment process in the comfort of your own home, without needing to travel to a clinic.
Assessments are generally undertaken to answer a referral question, and to provide certain information which is then presented in a detailed written report to parents, school learning support staff, treating psychologists or the NDIS. The cost of the assessment will depend on the complexity of the referral question, and prior to assessment, you will be provided with a written quote of the costs. Because we tailor the assessment to suit the needs of the referral question, we do not provide a price menu. NDIS funding may be available for the cost of assessment, but generally assessments are not eligible for Medicare rebates. For more complex assessments or reports, we can arrange a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) service, rather than an upfront lump sum payment. In all instances, we require the full balance of the assessment to be paid before we release the report.
